Julian asked Eli why the memory had been put in a jar. Eli told him it had been taken out to protect Julian from the people who were searching for the family. He also said the memory held a place and a name that could identify Julian.
Mara then came over to them. She admitted that she had kept forbidden memories for years, and she explained that the city had a hidden trade in memories.
Julian began to understand why the indigo jar mattered so much. It was valuable because it proved his real childhood link to the city. He saw that someone might want the jar to stop him from learning the truth. So he decided he had to recover the full memory before it disappeared or was stolen.
Then a stranger appeared near the shop and asked about the indigo jar. Mara looked afraid and told Julian to hide it if he took it. At that point, Julian understood that the danger was no longer distant; it was immediate.
