The Book Club

Text size

Five people sit and stand together in a bookstore aisle for a small book club meeting.

Emma put up notices for the first book club meeting in the shop and all around town. She picked a book that many people could read and talk about without much trouble. Even so, she kept worrying that no one would show up.

Ms. Alvarez arrived first and liked the idea because she wanted more reading in town. Noah came because he wanted practice speaking with other people. Mr. Harris also came, since he enjoyed being in the room, even when he talked more than he listened.

Doris came too, but she misunderstood several parts of the discussion. Her comments were odd, yet honest, and that made everyone laugh. Emma saw that the meeting could still feel warm, even if it was far from perfect.

As the meeting went on, the group started talking about their own lives as well as the book. Emma noticed that people who had not known each other before were now speaking directly to one another. The bookstore was becoming a place where strangers could begin to turn into neighbors.

The first meeting did not bring in much money, but it made the shop feel alive. Emma understood that the evening had created something valuable that could not be measured only by sales. After that, she began planning the next meeting.

She told herself that the bookstore might grow slowly, but it was growing in the right direction. Her confidence rose because the town had started to respond to her effort. By the end of the chapter, the shop felt less like a risk and more like a place for the whole community.
